Director
Prof. A.N. Namboodiri (1930-2007), who succeeded Prof. Abraham as Director of TBGRI from December 1983 onwards, was also a cytogeneticist of eminence with special interest in reproductive biology. He had his Ph.D. from University of Michigan and joined University of Kerala as a faculty in 1966. With his expertise and exposure, Prof. A. N. Namboodiri took initiatives to prepare a master plan and design for the Garden with the assistance of Kew Botanic Gardens. It was during his tenure (1983-1990), construction of the main building, laboratory complex and Guest House was completed. Major conservatories like Arboretum, Orchidarium, Bambusetum and Medicinal garden also took shape during his tenure. It was his efforts that helped TBGRI to have a strong foundation and to stand on its feet and flourish. He is respectfully commemorated by Dimeria namboodiriana Ravi & Mohanan (1997), Symplocos macrophylla Wall. ex DC. subsp. namboodirianus Sivadasan & Mohanan (1997) and Symplocos namboodiriana (Sivad. & N.Mohanan) J.Stephan, P.W.Fritsch & N.Mohanan (2021).
