Director
Prof. G. M. Nair (b. 1951), a distinguished Plant biotechnologist and tissue culturist joined TBGRI as its fifth director in December in 2001. He was responsible for giving a new face-lift to the garden of TBGRI and was instrumental in getting the third phase of National Gene Bank Programme sanctioned from Department of Biotechnology with substantial grant-in-aid. Prof. Nair took a keen interest in enriching the Gene Bank. The construction of a much awaited Herbarium complex and Visitors’ Centre began during his time. The Division of Garden Development and Horticulture was reorganized and specialized groups of plants were brought under it making the ex situ conservation efforts of TBGRI more meaningful. TBGRI also got its place in Botanic Gardens Conservation International, BGCI’s Asia Net-Work under the Invest in Nature Programme. Prof. Nair has given much impetus to the field of research in medicinal plant biotechnology and promoted the development of Arboretum and Medicinal Plants Garden to a great extent. He left TBGRI in mid-2005 to his parent department.
